Students of the School of Journalism of Bordeaux have been to Bilbao, with the collaboration of the NOR Research Group

From the 12th to the 18th of May the 34 students have been making multimedia cultural reports about the city, with the collaboration of the NOR Research Group of the EHU.

The students of the IJBA (Institut de Journalisme Bordeaux Aquitaine) of the Université Bordeaux-Montaigne have spent a week in Bilbao and the city has become a field of journalistic experimentation in the field of culture and art. The Elhuyar room of the Bizkaia Aretoa has been used as a newsroom of the KulturLab platform. Among the topics covered are the vitality of the Basque language, the alternative culture of the neighbourhoods, the impact on culture of the transition from an industrial city to a service city, the habits of young people and other socio-cultural issues.

In France, journalism training at the university level is a two-year master’s degree, and every year, students in the 1st year of the master’s degree spend a week in a European city to make multimedia reports about the city in terms of culture. These reports are later published in the School’s media.. This year 34 students have come to Bilbao, accompanied by professors María Santos Sainz, Jean-Charles Bouniol and Marion Ruaud. And they have asked for the help of the NOR Research Group to set up a workplace there and get contacts to receive information.

It’s not the first time they’ve come to Bilbao. They were also there in 2011. They were received by two members of the NOR Group, who gave a presentation about Bilbao, also highlighting the city that does not appear in traditional tourist guides.

The EHU and the NOR Group already have a relationship with IJBA. Specifically, the University Diploma in Basque Journalism, about the degree launched jointly by IJBA, UPPA and EHU to train Basque journalists in the Northern Basque Country. In fact, the first promotion of this Diploma will end in the summer of this year, with the incorporation of new Basque journalists in at least 7 public and private media in the North.
