On a proposal from the NOR Group and ALMA network, Diana Riba, MEP of the European Free Alliance, asked some questions to the representatives of the European Audiovisual Observatory at the Committee on Culture on 14 March 2022.
The questions concerned the monitoring of VOD platform content. In particular, those relating to the measurement of languages and accessibility resources. In fact, the Lumière VOD database lists the origin of the productions offered by streaming platforms, which allows the monitoring of the measures to promote European, as adopted by the European institutions. However they do not provide data on the languages and accessibility resources used.
The questions are based on the resolution adopted by the European Parliament plenary in October 2021. This resolution included the amendments tabled by the NOR Group and the ALMA network, which were drawn up and channelled through the European Free Alliance.
In his response, Gilles Fontain, Head of the Observatory’s Market Information Service, explained that they are aware of the lack of information and it is their challenge for the coming months and years is to measure the languages of content offered by VODs.
